Grand Bassin Hike (Îlet Bethléem)

At the heart of a steep cirque in the Hauts du Tampon, Grand Bassin brings together a waterfall, tropical forest and Creole chapel. A steep trail, an atmosphere frozen in time and the Candlemas pilgrimage make this a unique site in Réunion.

Grand Bassin, also known as Îlet Bethléem, is a steep cirque at the heart of the Hauts du Tampon. It is only accessible on foot, via a trail that descends several hundred metres of elevation through dense tropical forest. At the foot of the valley, a waterfall and a chapel make this both a natural and spiritual site, heavily frequented during the annual Catholic pilgrimage.

Practical information at a glance

  • Access: starting from the Bras Sec car park (Le Tampon), accessible by car
  • Admission: free
  • Recommended duration: allow 3 to 4 hours round trip depending on pace
  • Difficulty: steep and slippery trail in wet conditions — hiking shoes mandatory
  • Accessibility for people with reduced mobility: not accessible — significant elevation change, unimproved path
  • Attire: long clothing recommended if visiting the chapel

What to see there

The trail winds through lush vegetation: tree ferns, coloured wood, filaos. Upon arriving at the îlet, the Grand Bassin waterfall reveals itself, fed by the Remparts and Bras de Pontho rivers. The Notre-Dame de la Paix chapel, built at the foot of the cirque, is the spiritual heart of the place. A few Creole dwellings remain in this isolated îlet, inhabited since the 19th century.

History and context

Grand Bassin was populated by Creole families seeking farmland away from the plains. Cut off from the rest of the island for a long time, the îlet has retained a rural way of life. The chapel was built to meet the religious needs of this isolated community. Today, the annual Candlemas pilgrimage (February 2) draws thousands of pilgrims who descend on foot to attend mass.

Highlights of the visit

The waterfall and pool

The waterfall plunges into a natural pool surrounded by volcanic rocks. The flow varies depending on the rainy season. During wet periods, the fall is spectacular; in the dry season, the site remains accessible and less slippery.

The Notre-Dame de la Paix chapel

A small white chapel nestled at the foot of the cirque, it is open to visitors. Its setting — surrounded by vegetation and dominated by cliffs — gives it a particular atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of cities.

The descent trail

The path itself is an experience: steep passages, exposed roots, sweeping views over the cirque. The climb back up is physically demanding — bring plenty of water.

Etiquette and visiting rules

  • Respect the silence inside the chapel.
  • Avoid entering the private properties of the îlet's residents.
  • Leave no litter on the trail or in the cirque.
  • During the Candlemas pilgrimage, the trail is very busy: set off early in the morning.

Photography tips

Light is optimal in the morning, before mist settles in the cirque. The waterfall can be photographed from the rocks below. For the chapel, a wide-angle lens captures the building with the cliffs in the background. In overcast conditions, the greens of the forest stand out particularly well.

Location and access

The starting point is located in the Hauts du Tampon, a town in southern Réunion. Bras Sec car park is accessible from Le Tampon via the Colimaçons road. No public transport directly serves this trail start — a personal vehicle or car rental is necessary. The trail is waymarked (yellow ONF markers). No permanent official guided tours are organised, but local guides offer accompany services.

Nearby attractions

  • Plaine des Cafres — high-altitude plateau between the two volcanoes, starting point for many hikes.
  • Cité du Volcan — museum dedicated to the island's volcanic geology, located on the Plaine des Cafres.
  • Cascade du Voile de la Mariée — waterfall visible from the road in the Salazie cirque, in the north of the island.

Frequently asked questions

The dry season (May to November) offers the best conditions: less slippery trail, clear visibility. During the rainy season (December to April), the path becomes muddy and the risk of falls increases.

The descent is accessible to a hiker in good physical condition, but the return climb is demanding. The elevation change is significant and the path steep. Hiking shoes with aggressive tread are essential.

Both sites are in the south of the island but each requires a minimum of half a day. It is possible to combine them over two days by staying on the Plaine des Cafres, halfway between the two.

Every February 2, thousands of pilgrims descend on foot to the Notre-Dame de la Paix chapel to attend Candlemas mass. It is one of the most widely observed religious events in Réunion.

There is no reliable supply point on the trail or in the îlet. Bring plenty of water and food for the entire duration of the hike.

Photography is generally tolerated outside the chapel. Inside, adopt a discreet and respectful attitude, especially if a ceremony is taking place.
